Ultrasound Exams

Role:
Lead Designer
Type:
Web Application
Impact:
-60% Error Rate, -45% Task Completion Time

Client needed a cleaner, more efficient interface for resident radiologists to report and review hundreds of ultrasound scans daily. As lead designer, I redesigned their web application to streamline workflows and improve documentation quality.

01
Research & Problem
Radiologists spent too much time clicking and scrolling through a cluttered exam screen, leading to errors, incomplete reports, and missed QA steps. I shadowed clinicians and QA staff, conducted user interviews, and mapped out their end‑to‑end workflows. Key pain points included an overload of metadata, lengthy form layouts, and difficulty identifying the correct scan. Inspired by these insights, I sketched concepts to surface only critical information, compress form fields, and enhance scan recognition. We iterated on designs for a lean exam screen, preview thumbnails, and optimized image display.

Design Solutions

Streamlined Metadata Header & Form Layout

Condensed patient information into a fixed header showing only critical details and reorganized form fields into a compact, multi‑column layout. This reduced unnecessary scrolling and clicks, so radiologists could focus on analysis rather than navigation.

Pre‑Submission Checklist Validation

A dynamic checklist appears before submission, verifying that all required fields are completed and flagging any omissions. It also allows clinicians to see at a glance which exams remain incomplete, preventing overlooked reports and reducing QA callbacks.

Quick‑Preview Thumbnails

Each exam in the list view features a small thumbnail that expands on hover, allowing users to instantly confirm they’ve selected the correct scan. This preview eliminates guesswork and keeps clinicians in their flow.

Conclusion

The users who I have shown or discussed the update with are unanimously grateful and pleased by how much easier the documentation is. I have also seen an uptick in speed in documentation completion as well as overall % complete. It is an outstanding example of how good design/UI can impact healthcare.
